The New Zealand government has set itself a target to have a fibre broadband be available for around 87 percent of New Zealanders by 2022. Fibre broadband is the fastest broadband connection in New Zealand and it delivers stable and reliable internet speeds.
Chorus has started the process of withdrawing the copper network in certain areas where a small number of copper services are connected as they are no longer able to maintain their copper cabinets. The Commerce Commission also has designed the Copper Withdrawal Code to protect consumers during the transition from the copper to fibre network.
Chorus are required to give consumers at least 6 months’ notice of any change, as well as information consumers need to understand the transition and, if the consumer orders a fibre service, Chorus must have it installed at their home/business before copper services can be stopped.

As more customers continue to migrate from copper service to fibre broadband, and to align to our strategic simplification pillar, Megatel has decided to no longer connect new copper service connections from the 18th of June 2022.
This means after this date, ADSL/VDSL broadband and PSTN landline plans cannot be applied when you join Megatel. We will also be withdrawing xisting copper broadband and landline services from customers by the 30th of November 2023. The impacted customers will be communicated to about this with adequate notice closer to the time.
If you are still connected with copper service, you can contact us on 0800 634 283 to plan ahead for your switching process with us and ensure that you will not be disconnected by Chorus.
Please let us know if you have a security alarm, medical alarm, fax, or other services that rely on your current copper line connection. That way, we can take the right steps to keep them fully operational when you switch from the copper service to fibre. We recommend you also get in touch with whoever provides your alarm or other services to see if your devices will be compatible with your new fibre broadband service. Most newer devices will easily let you change the connection type, but an older alarm, for example, may need a small plug-in IP module from your provider to get things working over fibre. If you need to upgrade something like an alarm, it’s a good idea to get it set up and ready to go before you get connected to fibre.
And if you move address, we strongly recommend you to check whether fibre ONT box is already connected to the property and you can be simply connected to the fibre connection. We won’t be able to provide you with copper service even if the previous resident used copper service.
