From 1st May 2021, Megatel will be increasing the daily and variable rates in our electricity pricing for all our residential and business customers. This is to reflect the increases in the network pricing of NZ line companies that are regulated by the Commerce Commission.
Megatel’s residential and small-to-medium business electricity customers will see a rate change depending on the network and the meter they use.
Megatel’s residential and small-to-medium business electricity customers will see a rate change depending on the network and the meter they use.
The new rates do not include prompt payment discount but instead provides a lower fixed, and a variable rate that can still benefit you. The decision to cancel the prompt payment discount was to respond to customers’ overall feedback and request to make the discount and benefit equal and fair for everyone.

Common questions and answers
I am on an electricity fixed term plan with Megatel. Do these changes apply to me?
Yes. Megatel may adjust pricing due to any changes in third party network costs, taxes, levies, the NZ Emissions Trading Scheme, or any governmental or regulatory changes. The electricity pricing must be changed to reflect the network company’s price increase this time and it applies to every customer regardless of whether they are in a fixed term contract or not. This terms and conditions are listed on our website General Terms and Conditions.
When will I see these changes on my electricity bill?
The new pricing will be effective from May 2021 usage and will be charged from May 2021 invoice onward. If you terminate your electricity service in May 2021, the final electricity reading will be calculated with the new pricing for your final electricity invoice.
Why are these changes happening on 1st May 2021?
Megatel aims to provide consistent electricity rates and to minimize any price increases for our customers. We understand the impact price changes can have on our customers and we do not make price change decisions lightly. However, in the case of this network price increase, all electricity retailers will need to respond and make the necessary price increase.
Why am I no longer able to receive a prompt payment discount?
'Prompt payment discount' sounds nice in theory but power companies are actually offering prompt payment discount on the power price that have been set higher in the first place. The Government has criticized the prompt payment discount saying that it is misleading and even unfair to those you can’t pay their bill on time. For this reason, they have been forcing power companies to get rid of it. By removing prompt payment discount, Megatel does not charge you more. Your pricing rates has been lowered to ensure that the electricity price is fair and equal for everyone. You will still benefit from the lowered electricity rates even if you can’t pay on time. However, please note that you will incur 5% late penalty fee on your next invoice if you do not make the full payment on time. This change also reflects on our efforts to reduce any impact as we are only increasing the network price that has been increased.
